MÚSPELLSHEIMR
Album · 25 September 2026 · 12 tracks
The first ember before creation itself. MÚSPELLSHEIMR opens OTHRAVAR's journey through the Nine Realms of Norse cosmology, beginning where the myths themselves begin: in the primal realm of fire that existed before Miðgarðr, before the gods, before time. Across twelve tracks sung entirely in Icelandic, the album traces the full arc of the fire realm, from the birth of the first flame in Ginnungagap, through Surtr and his burning sword Lævateinn, to the apocalyptic blaze of Ragnarök and the fragile ember of rebirth that follows. Built on Tagelharpa, Kravik Lyre, Lur, and other traditional Nordic instruments, MÚSPELLSHEIMR trades the expected drone of Norse folk for something hotter and more relentless, a soundscape built to feel like the world's first fire rather than its last winter. MÚSPELLSHEIMR is the opening chapter of a nine-album cycle, one realm at a time, each sung in Icelandic and grounded in the source mythology. The journey continues with NIFLHEIMR, the realm of primordial ice.

Story Behind The Song
Before the nine worlds existed, there was only Ginnungagap — a yawning void bordered by the fire of Múspellsheimr in the south and the ice of Niflheimr in the north. Where the heat and the frost met, the ice began to melt, and from the meltwater the first being, the giant Ymir, took shape. The album's opening track follows this exact moment: the first spark in the emptiness, the birth of fire before the world itself existed. -

Surtr rises, fire burns His sword, the world trembles Surtr rises, fire burns His sword, the world trembles In Múspell he slept, a thousand years The sword blazes, never cold The Æsir fear the day he wakes He waits, he waits, he waits Surtr rises, fire burns His sword, the world trembles Surtr rises, fire burns His sword, the world trembles Who is this king? (Surtr!) Who bears the sword of fire? (Surtr!) Who will burn the world? (Surtr!) Who comes when all things die? (Surtr!) He strides forth, the earth is scorched The sky reddens, the gods tremble No wall, no shield Stops him, stops him, stops him The fire spreads, swift and silent Múspell's sons follow him This is the end, this is the beginning Surtr walks, the world falls Who is this king? (Surtr!) Who bears the sword of fire? (Surtr!) Who will burn the world? (Surtr!) Who comes when all things die? (Surtr!) Surtr rises, fire burns His sword, the world trembles Surtr rises, fire burns His sword, the world trembles Surtr rises... Fire burns... Surtr rises... Fire burns...
Story Behind The Song
Surtr is the fire giant who dwells in Múspellsheimr, the realm of fire, wielding a blazing sword. Norse sources describe him as waiting at the edge of the world until Ragnarök, when he will lead the sons of Múspell across the Bifröst and set the whole of creation ablaze. This track is written from the perspective of that waiting — a king held in fire, biding his time before the final battle. -

The fire host marches...
Story Behind The Song
The sons of Múspell are named in the Eddic sources as the fire-host that rides out from Múspellsheimr at Ragnarök, crossing the Bifröst under Surtr's leadership to join the final battle against the gods. "Eldher" — fire host — gives that army its own song: an unstoppable march of sword and flame toward the end of the world. -

Nine locks, nine guardians Deep in the dark, I sit in silence The sword sleeps, I watch over it No one comes, no one goes I am the wall, I am the night Sinmara watches, the sword sleeps Nine locks keep the secret No one takes it, no one steals it I am the guardian, I am the fire Sinmara watches, the sword sleeps Nine locks keep the secret No one takes it, no one steals it I am the guardian, I am the fire Surtr sleeps, I watch alone Lævateinn in my chest Fate is waiting, the day will come Then I will unlock it Who owns the sword? (Sinmara) Who holds the fire? (Sinmara) Who opens the gate? (Sinmara) Sinmara watches, the sword sleeps Nine locks keep the secret No one takes it, no one steals it I am the guardian, I am the fire Sinmara watches, the sword sleeps Nine locks keep the secret No one takes it, no one steals it I am the guardian, I am the fire When Ragnarök rises I will open, I will give Then Surtr will take the sword Then the whole world will burn Until then, I watch in silence Until then, I am alone Sinmara watches, the sword sleeps Nine locks keep the secret No one takes it, no one steals it I am the guardian, I am the fire Sinmara watches, the sword sleeps Nine locks keep the secret No one takes it, no one steals it I am the guardian, I am the fire Nine locks... I watch...
Story Behind The Song
In the Eddic poem Fjölsvinnsmál, Sinmara is named as the one who keeps Surtr's weapon, Lævateinn, locked away in a chest sealed with nine locks, held until the day it is needed. This song gives voice to that long watch: a guardian bound to silence and fire, waiting for the one moment — Ragnarök — when she will finally open what she has kept hidden. -

Lævateinn... Lævateinn... Loki smíðaði, í leynum langt Sverð úr eldi, sverð úr myrkri Enginn guð má snerta það Nema sá sem á rétt til þess Lævateinn, sverð sem enginn sér Lævateinn, dauðinn sem það ber Falið djúpt, í myrkri hér Þegar tíminn kemur, þá skal það vera Lævateinn, sverð sem enginn sér Lævateinn, dauðinn sem það ber Falið djúpt, í myrkri hér Þegar tíminn kemur, þá skal það vera Ég geymi það, ég vaki hljóð Þar til dagurinn, sem allir óttast Lævateinn, sverð sem enginn sér Lævateinn, dauðinn sem það ber Falið djúpt, í myrkri hér Þegar tíminn kemur, þá skal það vera Lævateinn, sverð sem enginn sér Lævateinn, dauðinn sem það ber Falið djúpt, í myrkri hér Þegar tíminn kemur, þá skal það vera Spádómurinn segir, dagur kemur Þegar Surtur tekur, sverðið mitt Heimsendir mun byrja þar Ég mun gefa, ég mun sleppa Enginn stöðvar, örlögin Sverðið bíður, dagurinn nær Lævateinn, sverð sem enginn sér Lævateinn, dauðinn sem það ber Falið djúpt, í myrkri hér Þegar tíminn kemur, þá skal það vera Lævateinn, sverð sem enginn sér Lævateinn, dauðinn sem það ber Falið djúpt, í myrkri hér Þegar tíminn kemur, þá skal það vera Lævateinn... Það bíður...
Lævateinn... Lævateinn... Loki forged it, in secret, long ago A sword of fire, a sword of darkness No god may touch it Except the one who has the right to it Lævateinn, a sword no one sees Lævateinn, the death it carries Hidden deep, in darkness here When the time comes, it shall be Lævateinn, a sword no one sees Lævateinn, the death it carries Hidden deep, in darkness here When the time comes, it shall be I keep it, I watch in silence Until the day that all men fear Lævateinn, a sword no one sees Lævateinn, the death it carries Hidden deep, in darkness here When the time comes, it shall be Lævateinn, a sword no one sees Lævateinn, the death it carries Hidden deep, in darkness here When the time comes, it shall be The prophecy says, the day will come When Surtr takes my sword The end of the world will begin there I will give it, I will release it No one stops fate The sword waits, the day draws near Lævateinn, a sword no one sees Lævateinn, the death it carries Hidden deep, in darkness here When the time comes, it shall be Lævateinn, a sword no one sees Lævateinn, the death it carries Hidden deep, in darkness here When the time comes, it shall be Lævateinn... It waits...
Story Behind The Song
Lævateinn is the weapon named alongside Sinmara in Fjölsvinnsmál, a blade forged by Loki and kept locked away until the day it is needed. Some readings connect it to the sword Surtr is said to carry at Ragnarök. The song follows the sword itself — dormant, forbidden, waiting out the long silence before the one battle it exists for. -

Eldógn! Eldógn vex, tréð finnur sársauka Rætur brenna, greinar visna Yggdrasil, heimsins stólpi Mun það standa, mun það falla? Eldógn vex, tréð finnur sársauka Rætur brenna, greinar visna Yggdrasil, heimsins stólpi Mun það standa, mun það falla? Yggdrasil skelfur, rætur nötra Eldur læðist, nær og nær Skjaldborg fellur, verðir hrópa Tréð finnur, hvað er að koma Eldógn vex, tréð finnur sársauka Rætur brenna, greinar visna Yggdrasil, heimsins stólpi Mun það standa, mun það falla? Eldógn vex, tréð finnur sársauka Rætur brenna, greinar visna Yggdrasil, heimsins stólpi Mun það standa, mun það falla? Níðhöggur bítur, rætur svíða Eldurinn kemur, neðan frá Örninn í krónu, sér hvað gerist Tréð er veikt, tréð er hrætt Ef tréð fellur... fellur allt. Goðin horfa, ráðalaus Eldurinn vex, hægt en visst Kannski í dag, kannski á morgun Yggdrasil mun finna eldinn Eldógn vex, tréð finnur sársauka Rætur brenna, greinar visna Yggdrasil, heimsins stólpi Mun það standa, mun það falla? Fire-dread! Fire-dread grows, the tree feels pain Roots burn, branches wither Yggdrasil, the world's pillar Will it stand, will it fall? Fire-dread grows, the tree feels pain Roots burn, branches wither Yggdrasil, the world's pillar Will it stand, will it fall? Yggdrasil shudders, roots tremble Fire creeps closer, ever nearer The shield-wall falls, the guardians cry out The tree senses what is coming Fire-dread grows, the tree feels pain Roots burn, branches wither Yggdrasil, the world's pillar Will it stand, will it fall? Fire-dread grows, the tree feels pain Roots burn, branches wither Yggdrasil, the world's pillar Will it stand, will it fall? Níðhöggr gnaws, the roots sting The fire comes, from below The eagle in the crown sees what happens The tree is weak, the tree is afraid If the tree falls... all falls. The gods watch, at a loss The fire grows, slow but certain Perhaps today, perhaps tomorrow Yggdrasil will meet the fire Fire-dread grows, the tree feels pain Roots burn, branches wither Yggdrasil, the world's pillar Will it stand, will it fall? Fire-dread grows, the tree feels pain Roots burn, branches wither Yggdrasil, the world's pillar Will it stand, will it fall? Fire-dread grows... The tree shudders...
Story Behind The Song
Yggdrasil, the world tree, connects and shelters the nine realms, but the sources describe it as under constant strain — gnawed at its roots by the serpent Níðhöggr, grazed by deer, and destined to shudder at Ragnarök. This track imagines fire itself as the newest of those threats, the tree sensing the coming of Múspell's flame long before it arrives. -

The watch-fire burns, on the border Between worlds, I stand guard No one passes without my seeing My fire never sleeps The watch-fire burns, on the border Between worlds, I stand guard No one passes without my seeing My fire never sleeps Múspell behind me, Miðgarðr ahead I stand here alone, since the dawn of time Whoever passes will find the fire Whoever passes will find me The watch-fire burns, on the border Between worlds, I stand guard No one passes without my seeing My fire never sleeps The watch-fire burns, on the border Between worlds, I stand guard No one passes without my seeing My fire never sleeps Who walks there? Who dares come here? The border hears me The fire sees all A thousand years, I have stood A thousand fires, I have lit The day will come, when I let go But not yet, not yet When Surtr calls me Then the fire will march forth Until then, I stand in silence Guardian of fire, guardian of the world My border, I defend it Until the day of wrath arrives The watch-fire burns, on the border Between worlds, I stand guard No one passes without my seeing My fire never sleeps The watch-fire burns, on the border Between worlds, I stand guard No one passes without my seeing My fire never sleeps The watch-fire burns... I stand guard...
Story Behind The Song
Múspellsheimr sits at the far edge of the cosmology, and the sources leave open who or what watches its border before the fire host marches at Ragnarök. This song imagines that vigil as a single figure: a nameless guardian standing between the fire realm and Miðgarðr, waiting out an age until the day comes to finally step aside. -

The fire speaks... The fire speaks... The fire-prophecy shows what is to come Flames write the fate of all No one escapes what the fire sees The future burns, in every spark The fire-prophecy shows what is to come Flames write the fate of all No one escapes what the fire sees The future burns, in every spark The seeress stares into the burning embers Visions appear, vanish at once The gods fall, one by one She sees it all, she stays silent still The fire-prophecy shows what is to come Flames write the fate of all No one escapes what the fire sees The future burns, in every spark The fire-prophecy shows what is to come Flames write the fate of all No one escapes what the fire sees The future burns, in every spark Sword. Fire. The sky is torn. Surtr marches. Bifröst burns. All falls. All ends. She sees Ragnarök, she sees the end She sees a new world, born from ash But her words, no one understands Until the day itself arrives The fire falls silent, the vision fades The seeress closes her burned eyes She knows now what she always knew Nothing lasts, except fire itself The fire-prophecy shows what is to come Flames write the fate of all No one escapes what the fire sees The future burns, in every spark The fire-prophecy shows what is to come Flames write the fate of all No one escapes what the fire sees The future burns, in every spark The fire speaks... The fire falls silent...
Story Behind The Song
The Eddic poem Völuspá — "the prophecy of the seeress" — has a völva recount the whole span of Norse cosmology, from the world's creation to the fires of Ragnarök and the new world that rises after. This track reimagines that prophecy as fire itself, a vision read in flame and embers rather than words, seen fully by the seeress but understood by no one else until it comes to pass. -

Weaponless, I walk weaponless Against fire, against Surtr My sword, I gave it away Love cost me, all that I had Weaponless, I walk weaponless Against fire, against Surtr My sword, I gave it away Love cost me, all that I had I remember the day, the sword was ablaze Skírnir asked me, I said yes For her, I gave everything away I did not know what it would cost Surtr marches, the fire draws near I have nothing, but my heart Weaponless I stand, weaponless I fall Love was worth it, I still believe Weaponless, I walk weaponless Against fire, against Surtr My sword, I gave it away Love cost me, all that I had Weaponless, I walk weaponless Against fire, against Surtr My sword, I gave it away Love cost me, all that I had I regret nothing. Though I fall, though the fire takes me I chose love, I chose freely Weaponless, but free, I walk forward Against a fate that I chose myself Weaponless, I walk weaponless Against fire, against Surtr My sword, I gave it away Love cost me, all that I had Weaponless, I walk weaponless Against fire, against Surtr My sword, I gave it away Love cost me, all that I had Weaponless... But free...
Story Behind The Song
The Eddic poem Skírnismál tells how Freyr gave up his sword to Skírnir so that Skírnir could travel to Jötunheimr and win Gerðr's hand on his behalf — a sword Freyr is then said to lack at Ragnarök, when he faces Surtr unarmed. This song is written from Freyr's side of that trade: a god who chose love over his own weapon, walking toward the fire realm's champion with nothing left to defend himself but that choice. -

Bifröst burns, the bridge falls Between worlds, fire creeps in Heimdallr blows his horn, but it is too late The gods run, but none get through Bifröst burns, the bridge falls Between worlds, fire creeps in Heimdallr blows his horn, but it is too late The gods run, but none get through Heimdallr sees the fire coming The horn sounds, across all the worlds But the bridge shudders, beneath the fire The rainbow breaks, colour by colour Bifröst burns, the bridge falls Between worlds, fire creeps in Heimdallr blows his horn, but it is too late The gods run, but none get through Bifröst burns, the bridge falls Between worlds, fire creeps in Heimdallr blows his horn, but it is too late The gods run, but none get through The bridge falls! Run, run! The fire is coming! Bifröst breaks! Múspell's sons cross over Where once only the gods walked Bifröst falls silent, its colours go out The world lies open, no defense The bridge that joined all that was Falls now, into fire and ash Bifröst burns, the bridge falls Between worlds, fire creeps in Heimdallr blows his horn, but it is too late The gods run, but none get through Bifröst burns, the bridge falls Between worlds, fire creeps in Heimdallr blows his horn, but it is too late The gods run, but none get through Bifröst falls... The colours go out...
Story Behind The Song
Bifröst is the burning rainbow bridge that connects Ásgarðr to the other worlds, guarded by Heimdallr, whose horn Gjallarhorn is foretold to sound at the start of Ragnarök. The sources describe the bridge collapsing under the weight of Múspell's sons as they ride to battle. This track sits inside that exact moment — the horn sounding too late, the bridge giving way beneath the fire. -

Sea of fire! Sea of fire! The sea of fire rises! The sea of fire rises, the whole world burns Nine worlds, merge into one fire Nothing stands, nothing survives This is the end, this is the sea of fire The sea of fire rises, the whole world burns Nine worlds, merge into one fire Nothing stands, nothing survives This is the end, this is the sea of fire Surtr marches, the sword blazes Bifröst has fallen, the gods are fighting Óðinn falls, Þórr is struck down The world that was, is no more The sea of fire rises, the whole world burns Nine worlds, merge into one fire Nothing stands, nothing survives This is the end, this is the sea of fire The sea of fire rises, the whole world burns Nine worlds, merge into one fire Nothing stands, nothing survives This is the end, this is the sea of fire In the void a flame is born... (from Ginnungagap) Surtr rises, fire burns... (from Surtr) The fire-prophecy came true, Sinmara opened Lævateinn in hand, nothing stops it The watch-fire went out, the guardian fell The fire-dread became the sea of fire itself Sea of fire! Sea of fire! Everything burns! Everything falls! The sea of fire rises, the whole world burns Nine worlds, merge into one fire Nothing stands, nothing survives This is the end, this is the sea of fire The sea of fire rises, the whole world burns Nine worlds, merge into one fire Nothing stands, nothing survives This is the end, this is the sea of fire Sea of fire... Everything is fire now...
Story Behind The Song
This track is the album's climax, gathering every figure introduced so far — Surtr, Sinmara, Lævateinn, the border guardian, Yggdrasil's fire-dread — into the single moment the sources describe as Ragnarök itself: Óðinn falling, Þórr struck down, and the nine worlds consumed as one. Eldhaf, the sea of fire, is where the whole album's story converges. -

From ash it rises, a new world is born The fire falls silent, life begins Rebirth, after the fire All that fell, will rise again From ash it rises, a new world is born The fire falls silent, life begins Rebirth, after the fire All that fell, will rise again The ash cools, the earth grows green The first grass, through black soil The new gods, step forward Where once, only fire was From ash it rises, a new world is born The fire falls silent, life begins Rebirth, after the fire All that fell, will rise again From ash it rises, a new world is born The fire falls silent, life begins Rebirth, after the fire All that fell, will rise again Baldr returns, from Helheimr The sun rises, over a new sky Nine worlds, begin again The story goes on, always onward From fire to life, from ash to earth The circle holds, the circle turns Múspell falls silent, the fire rests But somewhere, far away The cold waits, ice and mist Another story, begins soon From ash it rises, a new world is born The fire falls silent, life begins Rebirth, after the fire All that fell, will rise again From ash it rises, a new world is born The fire falls silent, life begins Rebirth, after the fire All that fell, will rise again Niflheimr waits... Rebirth...
Story Behind The Song
After Ragnarök, the sources describe a second world rising from the sea, green and renewed, with Baldr returning from Helheimr and a small number of gods surviving to begin the story again. This closing track follows that renewal — and, true to the cycle, points forward to Niflheimr, the realm of primordial ice, as the next chapter still to come.
