Vopnlaus, ég geng vopnlaus Móti eldi, móti Surti Sverðið mitt, ég gaf það burt Ástin kostaði, allt sem ég átti Vopnlaus, ég geng vopnlaus Móti eldi, móti Surti Sverðið mitt, ég gaf það burt Ástin kostaði, allt sem ég átti Ég man daginn, sverðið logaði Skírnir bað mig, ég sagði já Fyrir hana, ég gaf allt burt Ég vissi ekki, hvað það kostaði Surtur gengur, eldurinn nálgast Ég á ekkert, nema hjarta mitt Vopnlaus stend ég, vopnlaus falla ég Ástin var þess virði, held ég enn Vopnlaus, ég geng vopnlaus Móti eldi, móti Surti Sverðið mitt, ég gaf það burt Ástin kostaði, allt sem ég átti Vopnlaus, ég geng vopnlaus Móti eldi, móti Surti Sverðið mitt, ég gaf það burt Ástin kostaði, allt sem ég átti Ég iðrast einskis. Þótt ég falli, þótt eldurinn taki mig Ég valdi ástina, ég valdi frjálst Vopnlaus, en frjáls, ég geng fram Móti örlögum, sem ég sjálfur valdi Vopnlaus, ég geng vopnlaus Móti eldi, móti Surti Sverðið mitt, ég gaf það burt Ástin kostaði, allt sem ég átti Vopnlaus, ég geng vopnlaus Móti eldi, móti Surti Sverðið mitt, ég gaf það burt Ástin kostaði, allt sem ég átti Vopnlaus... En frjáls...

Weaponless, I walk weaponless Against fire, against Surtr My sword, I gave it away Love cost me, all that I had Weaponless, I walk weaponless Against fire, against Surtr My sword, I gave it away Love cost me, all that I had I remember the day, the sword was ablaze Skírnir asked me, I said yes For her, I gave everything away I did not know what it would cost Surtr marches, the fire draws near I have nothing, but my heart Weaponless I stand, weaponless I fall Love was worth it, I still believe Weaponless, I walk weaponless Against fire, against Surtr My sword, I gave it away Love cost me, all that I had Weaponless, I walk weaponless Against fire, against Surtr My sword, I gave it away Love cost me, all that I had I regret nothing. Though I fall, though the fire takes me I chose love, I chose freely Weaponless, but free, I walk forward Against a fate that I chose myself Weaponless, I walk weaponless Against fire, against Surtr My sword, I gave it away Love cost me, all that I had Weaponless, I walk weaponless Against fire, against Surtr My sword, I gave it away Love cost me, all that I had Weaponless... But free...

Story Behind The Song

The Eddic poem Skírnismál tells how Freyr gave up his sword to Skírnir so that Skírnir could travel to Jötunheimr and win Gerðr's hand on his behalf — a sword Freyr is then said to lack at Ragnarök, when he faces Surtr unarmed. This song is written from Freyr's side of that trade: a god who chose love over his own weapon, walking toward the fire realm's champion with nothing left to defend himself but that choice.
